Three tips for retaining productivity at 11 metres

Most forklifts drive around in conventional warehouses where pallet racking is up to 4 metres high. In those applications, warehouse managers prefer to use short trucks that can be used in narrower aisles, as this optimum use of space helps to improve storage capacity. If there is space above, they like to extend the racking and utilise trucks with higher masts. However, there are still boundaries for the movement space required by a counterbalance truck. When the height of a warehouse really needs to be utilised, other materials handling equipment will be deployed. VNA trucks or rail-guided cranes are specialised and highly efficient solutions, but are primarily to be used within the aisle. More flexibility is provided by the reach truck, which can often put pallets away at well above 10 metres, but can also be deployed for transporting pallets over distances.

Whilst being extremely stable, putting pallets away using a reach truck causes visibility challenges by default. Naturally, to work safely, these machines should be manned by your best trained drivers and obviously your load carriers must be faultless. Nothing is more dangerous than working with damaged or inferior pallets. Sure, pallet beams in fluorescent colours will help to put the pallet away, but real advantages are found within the reach truck itself.

How can you make sure pallets are loaded in the safest way? Here are 3 factors that can make all the difference.

1. Design

First of all, only use reach trucks with a design that maximises the operator’s view of high loads. Overhead guards should be designed in such a way that they not only protect against falling goods, but also offer an excellent view through the bars on the fork tips. Pay attention to the design of the mast itself or the fork carriage. Are they slender enough for the operator to see through and have good visibility of the load?

2. Smart features

Choose a reach truck with well-thought-out features that help put the pallet away safely. In some cases, these may also be available as a retrofit. Ideally, use a reach truck equipped with a camera/monitor combination and a pre-set height selector. Such a selector will help the mast stop at exactly the right height and often the steps will be aligned with the height of the beams in the pallet racks. Automatic centring of the fork tilt and side shifting in advance will also improve the safety and reduce cycle times. There is no such thing as too much effort when it comes to minimising risks.

3. Sway

When lifting heavier pallets above 10 metres, gravity and lateral forces come into play. When stopping, a mast might rock back and forth for a moment, meaning the operator has to wait for the movement to cease before they can put the pallet away. In materials handling this is called ‘sway’. Some reach trucks offer features that reduce these mast movements. For example, reach trucks can be equipped with passive sway control, where the chassis moves slightly to compensate for elevated load motion to dampen it. Active sway control is delivered by software which pro-actively delivers the correct adjustment to counteract the mast’s sway.

At time of writing, we may be in the middle of the busy Christmas period, but it’ll soon be the new year, and with it, time to make resolutions (and stick to them).

So here are a few suggestions for things that should be on your list:

1. Get a site survey

A thorough site survey should identify ways to make your operation more productive, flag any safety issues, and help you find areas where you can save money.

Everything on site from your equipment, to the racking and layout, to the site floor itself should be checked — rough surfaces are a major cause of wear to wheels, which could see you paying more for your maintenance contract.

And there are always ways you can be working safer. Does your site have adequate signage? Are your traffic routes well defined? Are there guard rails or other methods for pedestrian segregation? These are the sort of things that a site survey will look to help you address.

But a key thing to note is that it’s not just the what, but the who as well. Make sure your inspection is undertaken by a knowledgeable materials handling supplier who understands the needs of your business — they should be able to offer advice on what works specifically for you. A good supplier will reveal imminent threats to your business as well as any opportunities to maximise efficiency.

2. Stay on top of your truck maintenance

Unexpected breakdowns mean unexpected bills.

Forklifts can be complex machines and they’re often worked hard in tough environments for long hours. Parts can wear or break over time and lead to further issues if not caught right away.

Daily checks are your first — and best — line of defence against breakdowns. Ensuring your operators stick to a simple routine before using the truck enables any problems to be caught early on. A reputable forklift maintenance specialist can recommend a series of daily, fleet and annual checks for your site.

If you undertake repairs in-house, make sure you use mechanics who have been properly trained in forklift truck maintenance. They will need to use high-quality, approved spare parts to avoid unpleasant surprises.

3. Look at your training plan

Continuous training is paramount for a safe work environment. Take time to examine your training plan and see if more should be done. It’s not enough to just do initial training when staff join — when was the last time your operators undertook refresher training? Have any elements of their job changed since they started that require further training?

And ensure you check that whoever is conducting the training has been fully assessed and accredited to industry-recognised standards.

This article was previously published in our newsletter, if you’re not already a subscriber, sign up here.

When I was appointed as Chief Technology Officer of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) in April 2020, I was given a clear mandate: to transform MHI Group’s technological foundation in order to lay the basis for future growth.

Very often, when companies talk about technological transformation, they really mean replacing jobs and cutting costs, or moving systems to the cloud. Such projects may make sense in themselves but are often not connected to wider business objectives or properly integrated across a company’s operations.

What we are trying to do, however, is more fundamental and both broader and deeper. And while everyone I talked to, internally and externally, agreed on the need for urgent and radical action, most people told me that achieving this degree of change at a large Japanese multinational would be impossible.

I believe we are starting to prove the sceptics wrong. The first thing my team did was to audit what we already had — no small task in and of itself. We found that MHI’s 30-35 Strategic Business Units (SBUs) produce more than 500 products based on 150 or so primary technologies. There are areas of great strength, for example in turbines and compressors; but also some gaps, for instance when it comes to electrification and artificial intelligence (AI).

We are filling most of these gaps by enhancing current products and expanding into adjacent fields. But we also wanted to take a fresh look at the horizon, so we launched “MHI Future Stream“, an analysis of over 100 political, economic and social mega-trends using future-oriented foresight methods, to discover what brand new technologies MHI Group will require. This showed us the need to broaden our foundation to 200-250 technologies.

Many of these we will find externally via “Technology Scouting” at academic institutions and among start-ups around the world. We have put in place a new system for seed investments, allowing us to support entrepreneurs when they are still at the proof of concept stage and thus to build long, fruitful relationships. One such promising investment is into Infinium, a US company that uses captured carbon emissions to produce modern electrofuels.

The internal changes, however, are even more exciting — and profound, I believe. Traditionally, MHI Group is big and slow: typically, a new R&D project was given 30 million JPY ($300,000) and one year to produce results. But we need to be quick and fast: I now give our engineers 3 million JPY ($30,000) and 3 months. I tell my engineers to be “faster than a start-up” — after all, they don’t have to worry about raising money or renting an office.

I hoped to launch 100-200 projects in the first year with this new approach. We are already at 500: the explosion of ideas and creativity especially from younger employees has been wonderful to see. If the idea fails, at least it fails fast; if the result is promising, the team gets a fresh Y3m and another 3 months. Already, the first 400 projects have been completed and around 25% have produced prototypes or at least clear business hypotheses that are interesting enough for the strategic business units to incorporate them into their development plans.

We are just at the beginning, of course, but several core technology clusters are already emerging, including work around autonomous vehicles, electrification, heat management and new materials. We already build automated forklifts and self-guided robot motions. The same technology can be applied to make unmanned vehicles for other applications on land and at sea, in the sky and in space. We are world leaders in capturing CO2 emissions. Instead of storing the carbon underground, why not recycle it into products like car tires – people might pay a premium for a “green” tire.

Electrification, combined with our expertise in motors, turbochargers and mobile refrigeration units will allow us to create an end-to-end cold chain for sensitive commodities and products such as vaccines. Or take the naval ships of the future, which will fire not guns but lasers which would require power surges that traditional diesel engines cannot cope with. Our energy management systems with power generation, combined with our best-in-class heat management technology, can.

Of course, we need to set rules inside the company to make sure our research is always safe, ethical and has real-world applications. In fact, this is a global challenge, which is why I am happy to say that MHI is one of 600 companies taking part in the first Global Technology Governance Summit (GTGS), being held by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Tokyo, Japan and virtually in April 2021.

We have a long way to go to achieve a fundamental technological transformation but one year into the task I am increasingly confident of significant progress.

Source:https://spectra.mhi.com/faster-than-a-start-up-technology-transformation-at-mhi

Q: How safe are your hand pallet trucks? A: You might well be breaking the law!

Does your company use hand pallet trucks? If so, you could easily be falling foul of the law… Independent research suggests that moving a load of just 500kg could put you the wrong side of official guidelines. Worse still, government figures confirm that anyone using a hand pallet truck runs a much greater risk of injury than previously thought.

In this short report we will:

explain the legislation.

reveal shocking research findings on operator stress levels

give you valuable tips on staying safe and legal

help you choose the right equipment for your location

Your responsibilities as an employer

Let’s start with your responsibilities. If you’re an employer, it is your responsibility to do everything reasonable to maintain the well-being of your employees. In the case of lifting and shifting heavy loads, that means making sure you provide the right equipment and training.

Importantly, this doesn’t simply mean avoiding one-off incidents or injuries (the kind you might expect from moving an unusually heavy load). You need to be aware of the gradual and cumulative effect of heavy lifting on a worker’s musculoskeletal system…. and the damage such injuries can do to the smooth running of your business.

Workers exposed to the risk of carrying or moving heavy loads for at least a quarter of their working time. (Source: 4th European Working Conditions Survey – 2005)

According to the HSE, the UK agency for Health and Safety, more than one third of all injuries requiring at least three days off from work are caused by manual handling (lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling or carrying). On average, each sufferer took 20 days off in a 12-month period – which represents a massive inconvenience to your operations and a blow to your productivity.

How does this apply to hand pallet trucks?

Put simply, if you are moving loads frequently – or shifting any loads greater than 500kg – you should be strongly considering trading in your hand pallet truck for a battery-powered version. In the first of these scenarios, it is the cumulative strain that needs to be avoided. In the case of heavy loads, it is the effort involved in starting and stopping a load – and keeping it in motion – that is the key issue.

The official guideline figure for starting or stopping a load is about 20kg for men (typically the maximum weight for a suitcase at an airport check-in before you pay for excess baggage) or 15kg for women. The acceptable figure for keeping a load in motion is 10kg for men and about 7kg for women. But how does that work in practice?

How much effort is needed to use a hand pallet truck?

Independent researchers tested 17 different makes of hand pallet trucks in order to obtain an accurate average across a wide range of manufacturers moving loads of 500kg and 2000kg.

The results were conclusive – and shocking.

Starting a 500kg load from stationary takes, on average, an effort of 23.3kg. Increase the load to 2000kg (2 tonne) and the force required is 49.6kg – massively greater than the official guidelines mentioned earlier.

Raising a 2000kg load on a pallet truck is also very demanding – it taken an average force of 35.1 kg (again much higher than the guideline). Even keeping a 2 tonne load in motion – at 30.7kg – exceeds the guidelines by a whopping 53.3%.

Danger in the lorry

Operating hand pallet trucks in the confines of a lorry (and its hydraulic lifting platform) requires careful consideration. While keeping an average 700kg load in motion demands up to 18kg of force – 80% more than guidelines – stopping that same mass on the hydraulic lift platform requires nearly twice the effort.

Exposure to rain water increases this risk further. For maximum control, we recommend fitting the hand pallet truck with a rubber steering wheel and a manual brake.

What should I look for in a battery powered pallet truck?

It makes sense to purchase a reputable brand. Not only is the build quality likely to be superior but the dealer supplying you the equipment will be able to advise you on the appropriate capacity and the best type of wheels for your particular application. For example, softer tyres are better for slippery conditions but wear more quickly. Composites such as Vulkollan make a great general purpose tyre which is very durable.

Desirable features include:

A tiller arm that always returns smoothly to the upright position

A brake bypass function – allowing creep speed operations with tiller arm in upright position

Linked castor wheels – for maximum stability even with high loads and on sharp turns

Generous lifting height – this can prove very useful on ramps and loading docks, especially with damaged pallets

Easily-switched performance modes (can be instantly changed to suit the driver’s ability and the operating conditions)

A ‘closed’ chassis (to prevent water and dirt getting into the inside of the truck – fewer repairs, longer working life and lower running costs)

Heavy duty forks (greater durability)

Oil-filled transmission (quiet running, reliable and low maintenance)

Electronic pump control (smoother and quieter than old-fashioned contactors)

If you would like an assessment of whether you should be switching to a powered pallet truck… and advice on the correct specification, please click here

The conclusion

Unless you can reduce the size of each load – to 500kg or less – whilst also minimising the number of operations – the only realistic (and legal) option is to mechanise the handling process by switching from a hand pallet truck to a battery electric power pallet truck.

The big bonus is that you’ll increase the speed of the operation and reduce the risk of time off from health problems such as lower back pain.

Source: https://forkliftbriefing.com/work-safely/are-hand-pallet-trucks-putting-your-business-at-risk/
